Truth Bomb

about accents + dialects business english myth buster Aug 23, 2021

TRUTH BOMB: I'm not too fond of most linguistic terms: conjugations, parataxis, subordinate clauses, transitive verbs, proper nouns, ... ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do I know and understand them? Yes.

Do I teach them? No.

It's too ... boring? Not for me. But most definitely for you. Sometimes I look at study books and become so irked that I just wanna get up and do something else.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⚡️ What do I love instead? Functional language, dialects and accents. I love to learn how people REALLY talk (a descriptive instead of a prescriptive approach—okay, that's linguists' lingo, though). I firmly believe clear statements, politeness, etiquette, and decent behaviour win over grammatical finesse every day!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⚡️ At the end of the day, chances are no one will ever ask you if you've just used a present participle or a gerund?! (that's the verb+ing)

For the most part, people will ask you, "What? Come again!?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤓 So over to you. I am interested: Are you avoiding all(!) language theory, or is there anything you find useful? Let me know: [email protected]
